ABOUT THE SHOW
At Saint Barbara, another year means another retreat heralding the
perilousness of premarital sex and the importance of abstinence. For this reason (among others), Hana is convinced that hell on earth exists at the young women’s retreat. Elena finds the experience quite life- affirming and Idalia has no idea what awaits her. With no adults in sight, this year’s retreat will be unlike any before.

PLAYWRIGHT'S NOTE
My senior year of high school, 45th became president. I remember that year as one filled with record-breaking anger. Omar Fernandez, the brilliant director that he is, talks about anger as a secondary emotion. For me, sadness and dread were what hid behind the anger. I felt hurt. I am still hurting.
I would not repeat being in high school again (who would?), but I do find myself revisiting that time again and again. My teenage years shaped me. They shaped my voice as a writer, my ethics and values, and even my philosophy around relationships.
This play is not explicitly about politics. And yet, politics affect so many facets of our lived experiences. It impacts what sort of sex education we receive, what our history books contain, our access to reproductive care, our ability to safely navigate our neighborhoods and streets without being racially profiled and detained. The same is true for these characters.
You might be wondering, is this a drama? Tricked you, it’s a comedy. A comedy about teenagers, about that wonderful/horrible time filled with changes (both internal and external). Turns out change can be difficult, but also potentially hilarious in hindsight.
I started Saving Myself in the fall of 2021. Unable to sleep one night, I wrote the first eight pages and sent them to a friend the very next morning. As I write this on October 3, it dawns on me that tomorrow will be the 4-year anniversary of its inception.
Being a writer is all too often a solitary endeavor. But luckily for me, I’ve had a lot of support with this story. I’m very grateful for every single person who has left their mark on these characters. (Now you’re part of that legacy too).
DIRECTOR'S NOTE
I would like to say a few thank you’s to those who have made this production possible including our sponsors who give us money, UrbanTheater Company who have given us their home and support for the last few weeks, The Chicago Latino Theater Alliance for supporting not just Subtext Studio but many more Latino theater companies and artists who are are under attack right now by the fascist fucks in the federal government.
I would like to thank our production and creative team for working so diligently to create the chaos that you are about to see in front of you including Leiny, Rae, Irma, Harrison, Jean, Zuzel, Angelina, Liam, Rocky and of course our lovely playwright Maria who for some reason trusted this play into our crazy crazy hands.
Right now, our stories and our voices matter more than ever. This play might disturb you. I hope it makes you laugh but it also might disturb you. In a time where Freedom of speech is under attack, it is now when Theatre and the arts must fight back to protect those same freedoms that are the foundation of who we are as artists and people. In some places of the world, you could be put to death for some of the jokes that we make in this play. For that reason, I graciously invite you to laugh as fucking hard as you can and exercise that freedom of speech with me.
With that said, Free Palestine, Fuck ICE, Fuck Donald Trump, and enjoy the show!
